KiTTY & PuTTY & japanese

i used kitty as my default terminal in vista environment. but kitty doesn’t support transparency mode in vista, and putty itself doesn’t support japanese or korean.. i was very surprised, there’s a patch for japanese character and multi-byte characters. why putty doesn’t adopt it?

i delete kitty and install the patched version of putty. now japanese character is displayed well.

putty’s way of ssh auth is somewhat absurd. they use their own format of key and to generate ppk(putty private key), we have to get a private key of ssh2, not public key. why do we need private key when we just want to connect the server? is it ok? i don’t know at all..

ubuntu gutsy gibbon and compiz

when you upgrade to ubuntu 7.10 from 7.4 feisty fawn, and you’re graphic card is ATI, you will face some troubles in compiz setting. there’s some workaround for installing compiz to Feisty Fawn, and it makes gusty gibbon down. i really didn’t understand what went on at first. the only way to recover is uninstall all compiz-related components and reinstall.

gusty gibbon’s very cool, i admit. but you need to wait more, for fixing internal problems. i wish new ATI drive which may be ready to be released by AMD..

ubuntu totem player bug

i installed ubuntu 7.04 server amd64 version in my pc, core 2 duo 6600, 4G ram, asus p5b board. there are so many troubles, i’ll explain these later. and only left critial problem is vmware sound bug. when starting vm, the message is appeared /etc/dsp is busy and don’t work.. there seems to be some kind of workaround.. but none works in amd64..

and totem player has some small bugs, 1. real media file is not supported. 2. totem-xine doesn’t support subtitle well, on the other hands, totem-gstream works good, except internal flow error. it can be overcomed by clicking start button.

except that, anything is fine, oh thanx god!

i love ubuntu and compiz fusion very much! i will record all the things and publish in my blog. (majorly for me not to forget) if you have any question, feel free to leave a message to me!

zsh and utf-8

zsh doesn’t support utf-8 correctly.. and it seems to be needed much time to fix it.. though i don’t want to comeback to bash. i have to consider seriously..

innovate softwares with new features almost have critical issues.. i installed vista and can’t found virtual cd program.. i may wait some.. since software industry permitted beta as a good strategy, it’s not good to use newest one..

ps. i comeback to bash, and upgrade to its latest version 3.2 using mac port. it recognizes korean and japanese charater very well. though there’s actually no need to type  multibyte character in console directly, i sometimes mis-type and it can’t be deleted in a clean way in one-byte mode. i may miss zsh, but can’t take too much inconvenience..

bash to zsh

i heard that zsh is cool. and it wasn’t difficult to change to zsh in mac os at all. so i decide to change my default shell

this one line is enough to change your default shell

chsh -s /bin/zsh

zsh and bash uses different prompt system, so be careful. and anything else is almost same.

this is my prompt in .zshrc, copied from .bashrc
export PS1=’[%m@%n %~]$ ‘

i’ve used this shell in some days, and finally got the conclusion that, this one’s better than bash, but not so definitively. and i found no reason to return to bash, i’ll use zsh for a while, i guess.

flash player 9 and 3d desktop beryl for linux

i noticed today that new flash player 9 for linux was launched one month ago.. (it’s because i’m a mac user now)

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

now we can use full-featured flash in most of computer  environment. that means you can get full secure flash-based ajax operation.

and i noticed also that there is a fantastic 3d desktop environment for linux.

http://beryl-project.org/

so cool, more than vista or osx..

now we don’t need to adhere to one monopole os or browser..
so many people tried and the world became more democratic and liberal.
it’s a trend, we can experience more pleasant and universal pc life, thanx for all developers!

flash player 9 on linux is being developed now

i heard the news. flash player 9 on linux is being developed now. (i know i’m somewhat late.) check below link

http://weblogs.macromedia.com/emmy/archives/2006/05/yes_virginia_th.cfm

so one reason why i can’t use linux as my desktop wil be disappeared. still there remain some reasons like nateon(popular messenger service in korea, more popular than msn), xtoc (warez service in korea), flickr uploadr, korean internet banking and e-commerce service, photoshop, etc. nateon will release linux version, sooner or later. i don’t know about the others will support linux.. (i may use windows till the end of time..)

i may buy conroe and install 64bit linux from the beginning of 2007. i don’t like to use vista. so i wish all programs i want will be ported to 64bit linux till that time.. is is possible? i have to pray..

gnumeric

i’ve tested some office products as substitutes of MS office prducts. and found gnumetric is perfect for that usage! thanx gnumertic team! it’s nearly unbelievable that open source product’s quality is amazingly high. if you are using office in common usage, you may not need to buy MS products. one exception in this case is a font problem. there is no good open source font, especially Korean or Japanese.. that’s the main problem to solve. (spreadsheet is free to this problem)

cpu & software problem

it takes 5 or more seconds when i test something using the splendid jUnit toolkit on my eclipse 3.2 with callisto, so now i need more cpu power for TDD. (TDD is the key of next generation development) to be focus only on development, test time should be less than 3 seconds.

i researched current cpu markets and found that soon there’ll be intel’s core duo 2 cpu, code-name conroe, ensures magnificient perfomance enhance,  in 3rd quarter of 2006. but that improvement are only a story of a cpu side.

it may take two or three year for 64bit and dual or quatro core cpu market’ll be matured. this is not only for price, but also for 64bit, multi-processor support softwares including os.. (there’s few of 64bit applications in the market.)

there are many kind of problems when using 64bit cpu. do you know there’s no flash plugin for 64bit linux? only that reason, i can’t use 64 bit distribution linux now.. -_-;; kill me.. (i need itunes, flickr uploadr, MS office(excel, word, power point, onenote), and Nate On messenger for linux.. if that can be  done, there’ll be no reason to use ms windows..)

it’s not a good time to buy a new pc. vista and conroe will change the market drastically. so i’d better wait for the quad cpu ;-)

play windows media format in linux firefox!

new version of mplayer is available since 11, Jun, 2006.
it takes a year for new version, so a lot of parts are changed

http://mplayerhq.com/

it compiled so well in my openSuSE 10.1, unlike previous version ^_^;
just type like this

./configure
./make
./sudo make install

that’s all!

and in order to view MS media format, you have to download essential codecs package, it can be downloaded from same page. copy all codecs to /usr/local/lib/codecs

what i want is just playing wma to my firefox 1.5, so i installed mplayer-plugin too

http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/

it needs gecko sdk 1.8 when you compile, you can get  it from YaST or apt or ports or anything your modern os package manager.

./configure
./make

and

cp mplayerplug-in*.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins
cp mplayerplug-in*.xpt /usr/lib/firefox/components

yeah! baby, yeah! you can see windows media format file is played in your linux firefox machine!

P.S. auto-play is not supported because of security problem. you have to right-click the mplayer module and select play.
