WA Mart is a store only soldiers and people affiliated with the military can use. The headline feature is that the prices are incredibly cheap. Most things are about 30% off, and depending on the item some are 50% off or even more. That said, imported goods are sometimes about the same as, or even pricier than, a regular supermarket’s sale price.
A place like this
Only the qualifying person can go in — apparently even their spouse isn’t allowed. The conditions really are that strict. Verifying your eligibility is a bit complicated too. But I suppose you have to go through that much to get perks like these.
The notice
It’s best to read it carefully before you go in. Though I wonder if anyone actually shows up alone and buys three boxes of snacks and three boxes of drinks… imagine having to ban hoarding.
Soy sauce, sugar and so on…
Household basics like these are cheap as well, but if there’s no WA mart nearby it does get a bit annoying. Driving over and stocking up in bulk is the way to do it.
Noodles, sausages and so on…
Things like these aren’t all that much cheaper than at a regular supermarket…
Instant noodles
Ramyeon is a little cheaper, so it’d be handy if you eat it often.
Won Soju, Dokdo, Hwayo and more
They don’t feel particularly cheap.
Mixed nuts
The mixed nuts are decent quality, so I’ve ended up buying them often. They’re not cheap as such, but buying these at a regular supermarket costs a fortune, so there’s a real point to getting them at Wamart.
Whisky
They even have Lagavulin 8 Year…
Beef jerky
In a way, beef jerky feels like the best value here. Or rather, beef jerky is terrible value as a drinking snack in general, and this is finally a price where it’s worth buying. Stock up on a chance like this and it pays off when you’re drinking.
More jerky over here
Nice for when you have a drink at home now and then.
The beers
I’d say beer is the highlight of the military mart.
Soju
They sell it by the case…
Yebisu
Yebisu and Tsingtao aren’t at especially moving prices though…
Beer and soju prices
These prices are honestly absurd…
Zoomed in…
Terra is 1,000 won a bottle… Once you start buying your beer here, you reach the point where everything else feels too expensive to drink…
Fruit wines and so on…
I tend to drop by when I’ve run out of booze and snacks…
Nut & Berry mixed nuts
The quality is good, but it’s a shame the ratio of raisins and cranberries is a little high.
Beef jerky
This one has a lot in it, so it lasted me a good while.
Roast beef jerky
Great with a freshly cracked can of beer.
Gapyeong pine nut makgeolli
More ordinary than I expected… beer was the better choice.
