Just leaving a record of some unusual things I ate.
Ultra Garlic
These are potato chips packed with garlic right up to the limit, born from a collaboration between WAGYUMAFIA, a high-end yakiniku restaurant, and Yamayoshi, a potato chip maker. And they are pretty good, actually? They came out in Japan, but there is enough garlic in them to satisfy a Korean, and because they pushed it right to the very edge, they do not even come across as spicy. They struck me as a great snack with a highball or a lemon sour. Apparently this is the fourth release, and they say it sells out every time.
Potato chips flavored like fried rice, fragrant with burnt garlic mayu and scallion oil
These are potato chips that recreate the flavor of Ajinomoto’s frozen fried rice, and just like the Ultra Garlic ones, you get that garlic and scallion oil aroma. They tasted fine. So there is this invisible battle going on in the potato chip industry.. By the way, Ajinomoto also put out a gyoza flavored chip, but I could not get hold of that one, so I never got to try it..
Negidarake Jan-jan
It is a sauce absolutely loaded with scallions, and it tastes like taking the wrapper off a gyoza and dipping just the filling in soy sauce. Genuinely fascinating. Spoon it over rice and it turns into gyoza rice on the spot. Odd little things like this would make good gifts, I think.
Sake Ninniku Rayu, salmon and garlic chili oil
This one is salmon with garlic and rayu in it, and it is easy, solid eating. They really are good at making things to go with rice..
An assortment of Kishu Nanko plums
These are umeboshi meant to be eaten as a snack, and they are quite sour, yet people really do snack on this sort of thing.. They are not all that delicious, so only try them if you are curious.. Put it this way: apple cider vinegar and lemon water are supposed to be good for you these days, but in Japan they have been eating sour things like this for ages already, is how I would look at it.
Button bread
There is a knitting cafe called Baneul, meaning needle, in Yeonhui-dong, and this is the bread they sell there. It tasted like a small version of ten-won bread. There is cheese in it too.
Peony’s strawberry-loaded cake
It is a cake filled with strawberries instead of sponge.. The cake itself is good, so I am not sure it really needed to be crammed that full of strawberries.. but I enjoyed it. You can always just buy strawberries at the market..
Shake Shack burger
I actually go to the airport fairly often, and I have tried Burger King and the various other burger places inside the airport, but the quality is never that great. Shake Shack, though, was not much different from its regular branches.. And since it is the last meal before departure, I feel like it ought to be at least this good. If I were not at the airport, I would not go out of my way to Shake Shack, since Burger King is tasty too..
