Posting a bit of everything.
Asahi’s Fujisan Ale
This one’s good. They say it uses 100% Japanese ingredients, and whether that’s the reason or not, it’s crisp and tasty. It’s unpasteurised too, which might have something to do with it.
Yebisu Juicy Ale
Just okay. It isn’t easy to tell from the outside which ones are actually good.
Chocolate Mint
Japan turns out a lot of choc-mint desserts, and plenty of them are seriously good.
Yaizu Bonito Ramen
A really tasty ramen, and simple to make too. There’s katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) in the broth, which is probably what gives it that clean, deep flavour.
The result
Ringer Hut’s Nagasaki Champon
Perfectly edible.
All Pineapple
A pineapple snack, and it’s so-so. The original version of this has raisins in it, and that one tastes better.
Mentai Mayo Beef
This one’s good. And not all that spicy either.
Tenkaippin’s Fried Rice
It does taste like Tenkaippin.. but it was pretty ordinary.
Yoshu Shonin
Suanlatang, the hot and sour noodle soup, is hard to come by in Korea.. so whenever a decent one turns up in Japan I buy it on sight, and this one wasn’t bad either.
A shirasu specialist in the neighbourhood
There are a lot of shops around here selling shirasu (baby whitebait). They’re fresh and tasty, so I drop by now and then.
The raw shirasu of the day
Fresh raw shirasu comes in every so often, and it really is a treat. Not a taste you can get easily outside Hamamatsu.
Kamaage sakura shrimp
Sakura shrimp is great too, as it happens. It’s a specialty of the Yaizu area, and fresh ones come in regularly. They taste wonderful.
Kansai-style gyusuji nikomi
It’s in a cup so you just heat it, and the taste is fine. The trouble is that the portion is far too small.. there are barely a few pieces of beef tendon in there.. you really feel the inflation these days.
Umashio Kaki no Tane
I’ve taken an interest in kaki no tane, the little rice crackers with peanuts, and have been buying all sorts, but this one is ordinary.
Asahi Zero
Not great..
CoCo Ichibanya’s Curry Ramen
Edible enough. It’s a “locabo” product, so it’s low on carbs, which makes it easier to justify.
Pickled melon
The supermarket sells things like this too, it turns out.
Katsuobushi you eat as a snack
The bonito is shaved a bit on the thick side, so it’s almost like ham.. it goes well with a drink.
“Sozai ga Oishii” Chestnuts
Eaten like this, it doesn’t taste of chestnut at all. It’s really just a greasy snack..
Butter no Itoko’s granola
This one was pretty good. Not too sweet, and the mix of nuts and other bits gives it a nice chew. Good enough that I’d want to buy a few more of just this. Can’t believe it took me this long to find it..
