Todaiji in Nara

It had been a while since I last made it out to Nara. Well… as everyone knows by now, this is the town of “shika no ko no ko no ko koshitantan” — that deer-anime earworm — so there isn’t much left for me to explain.

Deer crackers

Nara todaiji.

You have to buy a pack of these.

Hold a cracker up and the deer come to you all on their own.

If deer scare you, keep the crackers out of sight. Consider yourself warned.

A Nio guardian statue

Seeing this makes me think of GANTZ…

You have to walk quite a way in from here.

The Great Buddha

Nara todaiji.

Seeing the real thing in person, it is genuinely imposing.

The small Great Buddha

Nara todaiji.

Small, they say… but plenty big.

Komokuten, one of the Four Heavenly Kings

A scale model

Nara todaiji.

From behind

Nara todaiji.

It had been a long time, but it is still a good time. If you have come as far as Kyoto, Nara is worth a stop.
