It was spring, so I thought I’d have some cockles, but I could never find the time and it kept getting pushed back. I only made it to Yeonan Pier once the season was almost over.
There was an Onnuri gift certificate promotion going on around here: buy 40,000 won worth and you get a 10,000 won voucher, buy 67,000 won worth and you get a 20,000 won one. (Whether it’s because of the election season or something else..) If you get the amounts right it works out to more than 20% off, so you can buy things far cheaper than at a supermarket.. Not an opportunity to pass up.
Mineo croaker
They’re selling it already.
Hairtail
Huge and really meaty.
They were selling scallops too, so I picked some up.
In these high-price times, this much for 10,000 won is good value.
Corn dogs and hotteok
There’s something about coming to a market that makes you crave this stuff.. I wonder why.
Fried snacks
I couldn’t head home without buying some shrimp fritters, and there was real joy in eating that shrimp straight out of the fryer, hot enough to burn the roof of your mouth.. This is exactly why I go to markets..
It sounds like Yeonan Pier will be expanding its parking lot before long, so the hassle of queuing should ease up from here on.. Large apartment complexes have been going up around Dongincheon and the population has grown, and the neighborhood feels like it’s turning into a nice place to live.. I never thought I’d see the day..
Scallops sauteed in olive oil
I’d wanted to use butter, but I couldn’t find any in the house, so I just threw in some olive oil instead, and it doesn’t taste bad at all.
Cockle shabu-shabu
To enjoy shabu-shabu properly you’re supposed to dip it in for just a moment, and getting that balance right wasn’t easy. Eating out is simple because everything is prepared for you, but doing all the prep at home was chaos. It was also a bit past the season. I’ve promised myself I’ll do it better next year.
