In English it is “russian cake,” but in Korean it comes out as “Russia Cake.” There are a lot of Russia-related shops around Dongdaemun, and this one is popular even among those.
A place like this
You can eat in, but I went with takeout.
The cakes
You can really feel the Russian style.
The cakes
Just looking at them, they seem incredibly sweet.

The Medovik and Napoleon I picked up this time
The darker cake is the Medovik, and it had layer upon layer of cream with a faint honey flavor, so the soft texture was lovely. The Napoleon felt like it had thicker layers. Either way the sweetness is straight-up sweet, which is a bit much to take on at my age (one bite is delicious, though…), and it made me realize this is what traditional desserts were like before nouvelle cuisine. Not everything traditional is good, though: unlike in the past, sweet food is everywhere now, so I think it is hard to call something delicious just for being sweet. Still, younger people might well love it. Anyway, I do think it is worth trying once, just for the experience.
