Cho Gourmet Sushi Musashimaru in Kosai, Shizuoka

Musashimaru is a conveyor-belt sushi place, but unlike the cheap sushi spots with a budget of around 15,000 yen that are trendy in Japan these days, what sets it apart is that it is a touch pricier and the cuts are big and high-grade. It seems to come to around 3,000 yen a person, but eating out anywhere tends to run about that much. When I was young there was a time when I thought a proper counter place, where they hand you each piece, was far better than conveyor-belt sushi, but now I find myself thinking, is it really worth the fuss? It is not a question of taste; being able to eat what I actually feel like eating matters more to me now.

A place like this

Musashimaru sushi.

Quite spacious.

Inside

Musashimaru sushi.

Nice and tidy.

Uni

Musashimaru sushi.

It had melted a little, but it was fine to eat.

Tempura

Musashimaru sushi.

Negitoro

Musashimaru sushi.

It costs a bit, but there is a lot of it.

Winter special

Musashimaru sushi.

Ankimo, crab miso and shirako.. you could call it a gout set, but there was no way I was not going to order it..

Asparagus

Musashimaru sushi.

So there is sushi like this too..

A drink

Musashimaru sushi.

Tuna set

Musashimaru sushi.

There really was a lot of it.

Raw shirasu gunkan roll

Musashimaru sushi.

I love things like this. There is shirasu sushi you only get in this area.

Corn

Musashimaru sushi.

They even have this..

Anago

Musashimaru sushi.

It brought Sushi Zanmai to mind, somehow.

Crab miso soup

Musashimaru sushi.

This one was a bit of a struggle to eat.

Winter set

Musashimaru sushi.

Winter really is my season. Crab and uni and ikura all in one set..

Kinmedai

Musashimaru sushi.

Lovely.

Buri

Musashimaru sushi.

Maybe because it is winter, it was nicely fatty.

Saba

Musashimaru sushi.

Delicious.

Miso soup

Musashimaru sushi.

Dashimaki

Musashimaru sushi.

This dashimaki is the shop’s signature, and it is about the size of a slice of fresh-cream shortcake. It tastes good too.

Edamame

Musashimaru sushi.

Kyuri

Musashimaru sushi.

The maki with nothing but cucumber in it was tasty too.

Ikura

Musashimaru sushi.

It tastes good, but ordering one more at the very end here was a bad call, I think.

Big cuts are nice, but I fill up so quickly now. It would have been just right to eat a few of the winter sets and leave, but it had been a while since I was at a sushi place and there was so much I wanted, so I ordered this and that and ended up stuffed. Thinking about it that way, going somewhere like Sushiro now and then and eating a bit of everything with lighter, smaller cuts does not seem bad either.
