chocott, a dessert shop in Hamamatsu

chocott is a small dessert shop run by a Cordon Bleu-trained pâtissier. You might be surprised that somewhere this serious exists out in the countryside, but country folk actually make pretty decent money.. wherever there’s a port, the money seems to flow around it.. so the town has a surprising number of luxurious, stylish places. Plenty of izakaya, too..

A place like this

Maybe the blue is a nod to the Cordon Bleu.

They sell chiffon cake as well, and the price is pretty good.

Madeleines, financiers, cookies..

About half of what I’d pay in Seoul, maybe.. at these prices I feel like I could live here.

The cakes

The prices really are lovely. In Seoul these days I feel like you have to hand over 7,000 won for a single slice.

From another angle..

Amanatsu tart

They caramelised the sharply tart amanatsu and added a little sweetness, turning it into a citrus tart that’s perfectly refreshing for summer. I never expected dessert at this level out here in the neighbourhood..

Benihoppe ice cream

Strawberries of the Benihoppe variety, frozen and then thinly sliced, piled on a milky soft serve and drizzled with condensed milk. It looks lovely, and the delicate strawberry flavour makes it a charming dessert. I asked, and they don’t do shaved ice on its own.

Most of the desserts were above par, and the amanatsu tart tasted like something worth queueing for. Having a place like this in the neighbourhood is surely part of Japan’s charm.
