Chateraise, a Dessert Specialty Shop in Arai, Kosai

Chateraise is a dessert chain that is famous all across Japan. They also run a slightly more upscale brand called YATSUDOKI, so anyone living in Japan has probably heard of them at least once.

It looks roughly like this.

Chateraise

It has the typical dessert shop feel, but half the store turned out to be the ice cream section.

Apparently the ice cream called Choco Bakky is their most famous item.

They have put up ads like this, too.

Chateraise

They embed a thin sheet of chocolate inside the ice cream, and it is seriously good. The crisp, crackly texture when you bite into it is fun, and you really get that deep chocolate flavor. I cannot think of anything in Korea that tastes like it..

This one is great too. It is an ice cream you cannot get at convenience stores, and it is so good. They have shops in the big cities as well, so if you get the chance it is worth dropping in. On top of that, the prices are very down to earth.

And so on.. there is a wide range of desserts, the prices are cheap, the taste is good, and you can even sample things.. it seems like a perfectly nice place to wander into when you are bored. It is easy to see why it is popular, though a common chain like this is probably an awkward pick for tourists.
