I saw the long line outside Geumeum Jokbal in Mullae and kept telling myself I would go one day, and I finally made it.
Fried jokbal with kkwari peppers
The portion is pretty substantial.
The set
Lettuce, ssamjang, all the basics come with it.
The fried jokbal
I wondered what jokbal would even taste like deep-fried, and it turns out the style is a bit like fried chicken or karaage. The fried skin especially, though it does not show up well in the photo, was wonderfully chewy and made for a perfect drinking snack. You should not compare this with regular jokbal, but the portion was generous and it tasted good. The fried kkwari peppers were fine, I suppose, though I did find myself wondering whether we really needed them.
Maeumyeon (spicy noodles)
It is a noodle dish that seems to stand in for makguksu, and it comes half-prepared so you finish cooking it yourself. The noodles need about 30 seconds? in boiling water, and it would have been nice to have a note telling you not to overboil them. The name means spicy noodles, but it was less spicy than I expected and I enjoyed every bit of it. I would have regretted not ordering it.
