Supermarket foods of July 2022

All sorts of food turned up again this time…

Joongang Haejang seonji haejangguk

Mart 202207

I bought it from Oasis, the online grocery, and it was pretty good.

Sawasdee Mandu

Mart 202207

Tuk Tuk made a yellow mandu, and it was seriously good. The wrapper is nice and chewy, and the filling is packed right in. It was a work of art.

Mamari perilla seed seaweed soup

Mart 202207

Perilla seed seaweed soup is good to begin with, so this one is good too.

Paldo bibim mandu…

Mart 202207

The heat wasn’t the kind of heat I like. A bit of a dull, heavy gochujang thing, I’d say…

Spoon-and-chopstick set

Mart 202207

I’d been wanting to buy a really good spoon-and-chopstick set, but you can’t buy a Korean one in another country. That’s because Korea is the only country that eats rice with that setup. So after a lot of digging, I heard Cromargan was good and gave it a try. It’s a bit thicker than a typical set, but it’s clean-looking and nice to use. Being Cromargan, it seems tough against scratches too, though I’ll have to use it a while longer to know for sure.

Cacciatore Black Truffle

Mart 202207

This one isn’t cheap, but it’s great with a drink. Nicely salty, and the truffle aroma is strong. So Korea makes this kind of drinking snack now…

UHT milk

Mart 202207

I drink milk fairly often… but hauling milk home from the supermarket whenever it runs out is no easy job. Why? Because two cartons come to 2 kg… And with milk prices going up lately, I tried a bunch of UHT milks that you can order online in bulk and keep for a long time. The best of them seems to be Pauls. Every UHT milk has a slight powdered-milk taste, and this one had the least of it and the nuttiest flavour. It costs a bit more than the other UHT milks, but Kurly puts it on sale now and then, so I got it cheap… For the record, Pauls Gold tastes good too.

Flat peach

Mart 202207

The flat peaches that are famous in Europe are being sold in Korea now, so I tried one. It is tasty, I’ll give it that. But the price… how many Korean peaches could I buy instead of this one… Until they get cheaper, I’ll only have them once in a while.

Geummiok dakbokki

Mart 202207

It’s called dakbokki, but once you actually cook it, it feels like dakgalbi with tteokbokki thrown in. Which is to say… it’s a good buy when you’re craving dakgalbi. If it’s this good, there’s not much reason to go out to some famous dakgalbi place… The chicken is good too, and being able to riff on it in all sorts of ways is another plus. So this is how good HMR meals are these days.

Tonkotsu ramen

Mart 202207

Calling it tonkotsu was a stretch – the broth is on the thin side and the noodles are nothing like it, so I was disappointed… but on the off chance, I threw in a pile of vegetables and boiled it, and it turned into the spicy tanmen I used to eat in Japan. I enjoyed it a lot.

A bowl I got for backing Tuk Tuk Noodle Thai’s crowdfunding

Mart 202207

They were crowdfunding a cookbook, so I joined in and got this bowl, and it’s been really handy.

A sauce that flew in from Thailand

Mart 202207

Someone who’d been travelling in Thailand gave it to me, and it was very spicy. Anyway, it was a good hit of Thailand after a long while.
