Kiwamiya, the Hamburg Steak Specialist in the Shibuya PARCO Basement

One thing led to another and I ended up in Shibuya.

A view like this..

Kiwamiya

Shibuya never changes.

A place like this

Kiwamiya

It’s down in the PARCO basement, and the queue is pretty long. I turned up after the lunch rush, so this was the short version — it kept stretching out and shrinking back the whole time.

The table

Kiwamiya

It has a real teppanyaki feel to it.

Soup

They feel a bit like box-tickers, but refills are free so I have no complaints at all.

How to enjoy the hamburg steak

Kiwamiya

Apparently the place started out in Kyushu, and once the hamburg steak arrives you tear off little pieces and grill them on the hot plate yourself.

Rice

Kiwamiya

Good rice is the default here..

Wagyu

Kiwamiya

This one isn’t the hamburg — they had wagyu on the menu so I gave it a go, but the satisfaction doesn’t quite match the price. I’m past the age where wagyu alone impresses me..

Grilling it..

Kiwamiya

This isn’t the finished state — you grill it a little more to your own taste. With the hamburg you just tear off bite-sized pieces and sear them.

Roughly like this..

Kiwamiya

Then again, wagyu is going to taste like wagyu no matter what.. it’s the hamburg that’s genuinely delicious. Great chew, deep beefy flavour — how on earth do they make it this good? It’s worth queueing for.

Soft serve

Kiwamiya

The soft serve is good too. Lovely.

A cat

Kiwamiya

Took this while wandering around Shibuya after a good meal.

CASETiFY

Kiwamiya

Turns out it’s hugely popular in Japan too..
