New Tantanmen is not the tantanmen we all know. Yokohama opened up to the outside world early on, so it developed its own food culture, which means there are noodles here you won’t find anywhere else. New Tantanmen is one of those.
The shop
They stay open late, so it’s a good spot for a late-night meal.
The menu
The prices aren’t bad at all.
New Tantanmen
I went with the regular spice level, but this is a little too mild, isn’t it? It’s hard to judge how hot things will be when you order in Japan. Some places that really do spicy are far hotter than anything in Korea..
With the most standard spice level..
At this level it’s pretty decent.. Once you dig in there’s a huge amount of garlic in it, so I understood why this counts as stamina food.. and in a way it might be a very familiar flavour for Koreans. Egg + garlic + chilli powder — that’s Korean cooking right there..
The noodles
It’s a fairly popular chain, so it looks like they make the noodles in-house. The texture was good too. This is just a gut feeling of mine, but if I were eating ramen as a meal replacement day in and day out, I feel like this kind of ramen is one you could keep eating for a long time without getting sick of it.. it isn’t sweet, either..
Inside
The explanation
Well.. apparently it’s good for your stamina.. Though when you look at it that way, I can’t help thinking Korean food is the absolute pinnacle of stamina food..
