Sushi Sakai is a tiny sushi shop right by Nishiki Market. So tiny it’s honestly startling. I was blown away when I ate here once before, so I decided to drop in again.

It’s the famous spot from Arashiyama, and now it has opened downtown too. I just snapped it in passing.
Sushi Sakai
Sakai is also the old name of a place in Osaka, and the surname of a certain idol… it carries all sorts of meanings, but there’s no real need to get into that. The place really is unbelievably narrow, yet inside were the owner and his wife plus about five customers. I was impressed everyone fit. When I asked what was good, it wasn’t the owners but one of the regulars who said everything was good, so I bought the signature items. I rather like this kind of atmosphere.

This must be around 3,000 yen a pack, but it tastes good enough to make you forget the price.

The umami here is seriously deadly. This is a genuinely great shop, and the flavour holds up even when you carry it home as a gift, which is a big plus.
