There’s a place called Taereungsusan about halfway between Gongneung Station and Taereungipgu Station. A local told me it was a great neighborhood spot, so I went to see for myself.

The sashimi is in great shape and the price is very, very reasonable. You get a spread like this for around 20,000 won a head, which is outstanding value. It makes you wonder how they manage to get by on that..

Grilled gizzard shad

It’s autumn, so I ordered gizzard shad as well, and it really is a treat. The nutty, tender flesh of autumn gizzard shad tastes best straight off the grill. Between the sashimi and the tsukidashi you’re already pretty full, but there was no way I was leaving any of it.

Maeuntang (spicy fish stew) + sujebi

There’s always a reason a place is doing well. I came away genuinely satisfied.
