Things I Bought at a Japanese Supermarket, Early 2020

Kamo-dashi seiro soba

Japan mart 202008

I bought it ages ago, and it turned out the best-before date was cutting it close. Noodles like soba keep for a long time, but the broth packet’s date… anyway, the noodles were fine.

Bagna càuda

Japan mart 202008

Bagna càuda is easy to make: you only have to prep the vegetables at home and the sauce just needs warming up. If you look around, there are plenty of simple, tasty dishes out there.

Ratatouille

Japan mart 202008

With the ratatouille, using ordinary tomato sauce instead of the special sauce doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.

Acqua pazza

Japan mart 202008

The acqua pazza sauce is tasty in itself, but it doesn’t soak into the white fish very well. I think it would taste better if you cut the fish into smaller pieces.

Wafu-dashi Curry Meshi

Japan mart 202008

It’s a curry rice you just pour hot water into, and maybe because it’s good, the variations keep coming.

Ça va? canned mackerel pasta sauce

Japan mart 202008

This one packet makes a really good mackerel pasta. No more need to go out to eat…

Santouka honten makanai ramen

Japan mart 202008

A ramen that feels like it edges just past the limits of instant.

Chen Mapo Tofu

Japan mart 202008

This one was just so-so…

Suanlatang

Japan mart 202008

The reproduction is spot on.

Shark fin soup

Japan mart 202008

There isn’t all that much shark fin in it, but it reproduces the soup you get at a Chinese restaurant really well.
