Japanese Konbini Food, December 2019

A bit of this and that, gathered up and posted.

The Hokkaido new-potato chips I eat around this time every year

Combini 201912

You only get this flavor at this time of year.

Potato chips slathered in uni

Combini 201912

Not all that special..

Hanabatake Bokujo’s otsumami selection

Combini 201912

Better quality than similar products.

Chips made from the phantom potato

Combini 201912

I think you could call it the ultimate potato chip. The flavor is a bit deeper than the regular new-potato ones. It’s expensive too, so once a year is probably about right.

Gisshiri Manzoku! Choco Mint

Combini 201912

It’s not that I even like mint chocolate.. but somebody bought this and then didn’t eat it.. so I ended up eating it.. Well, for a choco mint it was perfectly edible..

Turkish-style ice cream, choco banana

Combini 201912

Turkish-style ice cream means that famously hard-to-grab ice cream. Japanese convenience stores really do carry everything.. Sometimes it turns out delicious and sometimes not, and this one was just so-so…

Crunch Potato

Combini 201912

Hard potato chips.

A dressing called Josephine

Combini 201912

When I hear Italian dressing I picture something made with balsamic vinegar or olive oil, but I have no idea what French dressing is even supposed to mean. Anyway, Josephine is a brand famous in Japan for French dressing, and the taste.. hmm.. it does make me wonder whether this is really France, but it’s tasty all the same (a slightly mayonnaise-like flavor with some acidity added..) and on the expensive side.. It would go well with a vegetable salad.

Baked broccoli

Combini 201912

You have to eat plenty of broccoli while you’re young. Handy that they sell it at the convenience store.

Seven Premium Gold Kin no Monaka azuki..

Combini 201912

To my taste it was just okay..

Shrimp bisque

Combini 201912

It tasted like something from a restaurant.

Kanda Matsuya

Combini 201912

I bought it to eat as toshikoshi soba, and it’s good.

I bought them because I’m quite into throat lozenges..

Combini 201912

They work instantly when I come down with a sore throat, so I’ve stocked up on quite a lot of nodo-ame.. but these days I wash my hands so diligently and wear a mask, so I barely catch colds.. If I’d known it would go like this, I’d have started living this way much sooner..

Gogyo’s cup ramen

Combini 201912

It tastes similar to jajangmyeon.. well.. not bad..

Donbei’s gachi garlic butter miso udon

Combini 201912

Jiro-style, in other words. Even as an udon it’s loaded with garlic, so it reproduces the original well.

Smoked oil sardines

Combini 201912

Smoke + oil + sardines is about the strongest combination there is. I doubt there’s anything better to drink with. In Korea you hardly see anywhere that sells it.

Negibaka garlic shio ramen

Combini 201912

It’s absolutely packed with freeze-dried spring onion. If you like spring onion it’s worth eating.

Nodo-ame

Combini 201912

The ginger flavor seemed good for a cold, so I gave it a try.

Tsuta, miso flavor

Combini 201912

It was just so-so..

Rich oyster cream soup

Combini 201912

The oyster flavor was really deep and it was delicious. This is one to buy a few of for the winter.

Tomato soup

Combini 201912

It wasn’t bad.

Rich mushroom potage

Combini 201912

I feel like I could probably make this at home and get the same taste, but it’s a hassle.. so instant food like this is precious..
