Shimonya in Asagaya is the place this neighbourhood knows for its skewers, and since it gets so busy I timed my visit for opening. Get there before five and you can eat at your leisure; after that it seems to fill right up.
Front entrance
The value is outstanding, so there are branches all over the place. If one of these were in front of my house I would have been in every week.
Menu
There is a huge lineup of 100-yen skewers, so no matter how much you eat and drink it is hard to get past 3,000 yen. It is not only cheap either, the quality is decent. Drink prices are about normal, so I suspect that is where they make their margin.
Highball
Mitsuya cider
Motsu nikomi
Dishes like this are made up in big batches, so ordering one with your first drink means it arrives straight away, which is nice.

Steak – it costs a bit, but it was good.
This is not a place chasing the outer limits of the skewer, but a moderate night runs about 2,000 yen and a heavy one about 3,000, and you leave full of good skewers. Feels like a genuinely honest neighbourhood favourite to me.
