The things I bought at Korean convenience stores in summer 2019

Beef pho

Combini korea

The broth goes without saying, but the beef is surprisingly substantial. It’s a broth that goes really well with cilantro, except cilantro is expensive, so I couldn’t put much in, which was a shame…

Anchovy rice noodles

Combini korea

About right as morning-after hangover food, that’s all…

Cold ramyeon

Combini korea

It tasted like hiyashi chuka with Korean-style heat added, so it was pretty good.

Tempura udon

Combini korea

Tempura udon is a bit heavy to begin with, but bagged ramyeon is easy to tweak, so I added a little more fish cake plus some Cheongyang chilies and kimchi, and it got even better.

Busan eomuk-tang

Combini korea

A cup noodle that benchmarked tempura udon nicely and then made it spicy…

Chojang bibim-myeon

Combini korea

They can’t just copy Paldo’s Bibim Myun outright, so it felt like their answer was to throw in some seaweed. Which is to say, it’s tasty…

Corn cheese noodles

Combini korea

Not all that good… Work was genuinely hectic around this time and I’d end up working halfway through a cup noodle… so I came to prefer the soupless cup noodles over the ones with broth…

Sundae…

Combini korea

It was closer to vegetable sundae; it didn’t feel like much meat went into it.

Stir-fried gan-jjamppong

Combini korea

Like jjamppong broth cooked right down… It works pretty well as a drinking snack…

Malatang noodles

Combini korea

This one turned out rather well. The mala flavor was properly there. Looks like they released a bagged version too…

Jjajang Buldak Bokkeum Myun

Combini korea

Just so-so…

Must be the Extreme Job effect…

Combini korea

Just so-so…

Tuna mayo

Combini korea

Just so-so…

Yakisoba

Combini korea

I was surprised, because it really tasted like the yakisoba I’ve eaten in Japan. To think a product like this is on sale in Korea…

Novelty food…

Combini korea

It tasted like potato chips with ramyeon soup powder sprinkled over them…

Samyang Ramen

Combini korea

Similar to Happy Ramyun… the point is to eat it quickly, before the noodles go soggy.

Tomato ramyeon

Combini korea

It’s packed with freeze-dried tomato, so the savory depth is good. Seems like a fine choice health-wise, too. It isn’t cheap, though, and eating a cheap cup noodle and having your vegetables separately would be better for you anyway.

Tonkotsu ramen

Combini korea

I don’t think reproducing the taste of tonkotsu ramen is all that hard… but it was surprising that this kind of orthodox Japanese flavor gets released in Korea. It must mean everyone has gotten used to the taste of tonkotsu ramen.

Guksu (Korean somen-style noodles)

Combini korea

Just as the name says, it was delicious alongside kongguk-mul, the chilled soy-milk broth. Kind of amazing.

Chapagetti Truffle

Combini korea

The truffle aroma was there when I first tore open the sachet, but once I mixed it all in there was none of it left. Makes me wonder whether it needed to be made at all.
