Toyosu Market, after all the controversy and delays, finally opened in early October. The old Tsukiji Market is apparently going to become a parking lot or a park or something. I was curious how things had changed, so I went to have a look.

It’s closed off. Toyosu Market turned out not to be all that far from Tsukiji.

I have my own memories of Tsukiji, to be honest… but it really was getting old, so I suppose the move was necessary.

The outer market is still running as before, and there were plenty of tourists. I doubt that’ll change much going forward.

It’s split into several separate blocks.

The block attached to the market itself is where the crowds are. Most of the famous restaurants are in there too.

Apparently you can’t get in unless you’re in the trade. This was something people had complained about for ages, and the move cleaned it all up in one go.

Sushi Dai

Daiwa Sushi and Sushi Dai have been separated now… it feels like Daiwa Sushi got the short end of the stick, but either way it does spread the crowds out.

Maybe because it’s just opened, but the lines are long pretty much everywhere.

I don’t think this place was in the inner market before, but it’s moved in this time.

The smaller shops have been split off into the next block over. The lines are long here too, but not like the market block, and a few shops are actually quiet.

Toyosu handles not just seafood but produce too… and it’s a pretty big operation.

Daiwa Sushi

With Daiwa Sushi moving over to the produce side, it’s inevitably drawing fewer people than Sushi Dai. Then again, maybe that just means you can enjoy your sushi in a bit more peace.

Seeing the market after the move, with every one of the old problems fixed, really gave me a lot to think about. Noryangjin Market, by comparison… Anyway, having been once, I have a feeling I’ll end up going to the old Tsukiji far more often. Toyosu feels like somewhere I’ll only visit when I’m showing tourists around.
