Mito is home to Kairakuen. Together with Korakuen in Okayama and Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, it’s one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. I’d been wanting to visit for a while, and this time I finally made the time. It’s not hard to get to.
The shop at the entrance
They have some simple desserts.
Ume (plum) seems to be the specialty here, so I bought an umeboshi daifuku to try.
It wasn’t bad.
The main gate (East Gate)
The garden is huge. I figured that’s why it’s one of the big three.
The path from the entrance
It photographs nicely.
Here’s what it looks like.
It’s big in scale, but the details leave a little to be desired…
Plum trees
The trees were loaded with plums. The upkeep isn’t great, though.
What a lovely view
There’s a railway running through the garden… that’s the scale of it…
The sky…

Inside Kobuntei
It’s a paid-entry building, but it was wonderful. In some ways it might even be better than the garden itself.
