Sopoong, a Hanwoo Beef Grill in Cheongdam-dong

Lately there’s been a real surge in places touting premium Hanwoo beef as their main draw. I’d kept a few names in mind for the next time a beef occasion came up, but when it actually did, I couldn’t get a reservation anywhere.. So, on the theory that the old favorites are old favorites for a reason, I went to Sopoong.

The sign

The place is on the small side. Maybe that’s why the prices are so reasonable.

The grill

Sopoong

You don’t need much to grill Hanwoo, really.

I think this was the ribeye.. The photos didn’t come out great..

Wine of the day

Sopoong

A bottle we brought along, and honestly a bit more wine than the beef called for. In both nose and palate, it’s been a while since I had something at this level.

Grilling..

More grilling..

Beef is beef, I guess.. It goes without saying, but it’s expensive and delicious. A place like Sopoong is priced with some of the froth taken out, so I could go often if I really wanted to, but lately I just can’t muster that kind of enthusiasm.. Japanese-style yakiniku places are also fun because you get to try all sorts of different cuts.. Anyway, I want to make a lot of money and go eat beef again next time..
