A shaved ice shop called Kooriya Peace shows up in the drama Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salaryman, so I went to check it out. My blog is pretty thin on content, so for a proper explanation you might be better off watching the drama on Netflix..
The entrance
It’s not that far from Kichijoji Station. It’s also on the way to Inokashira Park.
This is the reservation sheet.
The system is rather clever: each person has to write their name in their own slot. So if there are two of you and you want to book for 11, you write one name at 11:00 and another at 11:04. Very much a shaved ice shop.
Today’s menu
There are lots of interesting-looking shaved ices.
A lap around the park
After booking, I did a lap around the park while waiting for my companion.
Shaved ice and a doggy
Apparently the dog-related items are the owner’s hobby. The guy serving was quite handsome, which might be part of why it’s so popular with women.
Roasted sweet potato cheese with custard
It was in a style a bit like creme brulee. The taste was somewhere between shaved ice and cake. It’s a dessert made with a lot of care, and it felt fresh in the way it pushed past the limits of shaved ice, so to speak..
Fuwafuwa double strawberry, White Day version
I ordered it because it was a limited edition, but the sauce was so heavy that I wondered whether the regular strawberry shaved ice would have been better. Double felt like a bit much..
Citrus rare cheesecake
The rare cheesecake was refreshing. A real treat.
Kooriya Peace is a place that serves high-level shaved ice. Shops like this have been popping up in Tokyo lately (Yukiusagi, for example), and it’s a fun trend.
