Convenience Store Gourmet 201701

When work gets busy I end up eating from the convenience store… but honestly, the convenience store makes it easier to keep your nutrition balanced. Go to a cheap chain restaurant and most of it isn’t good for you anyway. Japan is a country with a highly developed convenience store infrastructure, so you might as well make full use of it.

Noroshi’s cup ramen

With a generous pile of niboshi on top

With niboshi-style ramen, as long as you load it up with niboshi, the taste always turns out fine. Call it the safe bet.

Koikeya’s potato chips made with the phantom potato and Okhotsk sea salt

These came out as a limited edition this autumn… and they’re incredibly good. Thin yet crispy, and once you start eating you end up finishing the whole bag. At 300 yen they’re a bit pricey for potato chips, but being a limited edition they sold out in no time.

The explanation on the back

They say it uses a variety called Imakane Danshaku.

This is what they look like…

You have to try them to understand…

Nakiryu’s tantanmen

It was just okay.

Nakamoto’s Cheese Strike

The Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto cup noodle series is, well… all pretty good. This one is a sort of variation, supposedly a bit milder, but I couldn’t tell where the mild part was at all. It was just tasty.

Men Labo Hiro

Apparently it’s a popular ramen shop these days… hmm… it was the worst. Tori soba is hard to get right to begin with, and even harder as a cup noodle.

Mini cup ramen, moyashi miso

There are quite a few of these light 100-yen ramen series… and they all taste fine.

Mamiana

This isn’t ramen but rayu niku soba. Think spicy soba with meat in it? It tastes exactly like the name says, and since it’s soba the broth is on the sweet side, which made it a decent hangover cure after a night of drinking too much.

Boiled dumplings

I think it was around 300 yen, and it tasted not much different from what you’d order at a restaurant.

Kimchi jjigae

They even sell things like this at the convenience store. It tastes fine. Being able to eat food of this level right in front of the office makes it the best alternative when I’m too busy to go far.
