Maihama in Shinbashi

Maihama is what you could call the number-one lunch spot in Shinbashi. It opens at 11:30, and the line is already long from that moment. For a 1,000 yen lunch, what you get is just absurd.

The place is pretty spacious inside, but it fills right up. Sharing a table goes without saying.

The house specialty here is gindara nitsuke, simmered black cod, and it is so popular that you have to walk in right at the 11:30 opening to be able to order it. When I tried to order it at noon they told me it was already sold out, so I went for the sanma, which is in season in autumn. The sashimi was good quality too, and it comes with chawanmushi, miso soup and so on, a really generous spread. With a lunch like this, no wonder it is popular. I would happily make one day a week Maihama day and keep coming back.

A while later I also tried the house specialty, the gindara nitsuke, and it really does melt in your mouth. It seems to be made not from fresh fish but from lightly dried fish, and for 1,000 yen I doubt you will find that level of flavor anywhere else.
