Uzuraya has a Korean menu, which may be why it has become such a popular spot with Korean visitors. I had been eyeing it on Instagram, and eating there in person made me understand what the fuss was about.
The entrance
It’s near Gion, so it’s easy to find. The place is one long, narrow strip and a bit cramped inside, but that never got in the way of eating.
Beer
Cabbage
The owner, hard at work over the grill
He looks so much like Teruyuki Kagawa that it startled me. Less “resembles” and more “wait, is that actually him?”…
Chicken
We ordered all sorts of things, and every single one came out grilled to perfection, so it was all delicious. Which is why I’m just posting the photos without much commentary.
Tebasaki (chicken wings)
Chicken
Shochu
Shochu like this: Mori Izo and Murao
Sasami (chicken tenderloin)
Skin
Soft-boiled eggs
So good.
Kinshinsai (daylily buds)
Green onion
Lotus root
Tomato
Sweet.
More shochu: Hyakunen no Kodoku and Maoh
Japanese barley shochu tastes a lot like whisky, which makes it fun.
Probably sweet potato
Yaki onigiri (grilled rice ball)
There’s foie gras inside…
I think this was some kind of cured ham, but I can’t remember the details…
Probably tsukune…
A champagne cocktail made with Yamanashi peaches
It was wonderfully smooth. Fruit cocktails really are the best.
Probably yuzu liqueur
Spare ribs
Delicious.
I think this was some kind of offal, but my memory is hazy
Foie gras
Just as good eaten like this.
This is the yuzu liqueur
Pumpkin
The three Sato brothers
Sunagimo (gizzard)
We ate a truly staggering amount that day. Three hours at lunch and another three at dinner… This isn’t exactly an ordinary crew, but even so, eating like that is quite the feat.
