SABAR, an Izakaya in Daimon

I had a reason to go for a drink in Daimon, and while looking for an izakaya nearby I ended up at a place called SABAR. Saba means mackerel, and it is a mackerel specialist: every single dish has mackerel in it. It is a fun concept, and they have been opening branches all over Tokyo lately, so I decided to give it a try. Or rather, it was simply an easy place to get to..

Otoshi

sabar

Faithful to the concept. Surprisingly, the bo-zushi was good.

“Otsukare saba desu” beer

sabar

The design details are nice.

Salad

sabar

A pretty generous portion.

Sashimi

sabar

The shime-saba was good too.

Skewers

sabar

These were decent as well.

Namero

sabar

Finely chopped mackerel; usually it is eaten as a nibble with sake.

Dewar’s highball

sabar

This is the house special highball, and it is tasty. Having menu items you can only get at that one shop is part of the fun of eating out in Japan.

Grilled mackerel

sabar

It is a fair-sized portion, but I ordered one anyway.

Surprisingly, ordering nothing but mackerel was not that bad, but I also had the feeling that having a light drink here and moving on to another place would be more satisfying. Next time I should try their Italian- or Spanish-style dishes too.
