My friend was searching Naver for good restaurants in Gion, Kyoto, and a place called Tenshu came up. Just like the day before, if it had been my pick I would never have gone to a place like this. Anyway, we checked out in time for opening, put the car in a parking lot and got in line. It is a popular place, so you have to line up before it opens.
By the way, maybe because it was the off-season, I saw a huge number of empty parking lots. Run-down buildings have been torn down and parking lots have gone up in almost every alley. Getting there by car is not that hard. This time I used the big parking lot in front of Yasaka Shrine, and it was decent value.
Nicely prepped anago (conger eel)
We got in with the first seating, but still had to wait a bit. Once that prepped anago runs out, they presumably close for the day.
The interior
Very Kyoto; nicely done up.
Ebi and anago mix tendon
Anago is a bit cheaper and ebi (shrimp) is pricier, so I tried the mix.
My friend’s kakiage-don
The portion was absurdly big, and the taste was nothing special either.
The ebi I had
The anago was so-so, but the ebi was tasty. Turns out this place’s best seller is the tendon with two ebi on top. But at around 2,000 yen there are plenty of other options, so there was no real need to come here. And so the anti-gourmet trip continues.
