I heard a rumor that an unusual ramen shop had opened in Kasuga, so I went to check it out. Kasuga is the area around Tokyo Dome.

The entrance

There’s a torpedo mounted above the door. “Gyorai” means torpedo.

Siphons!

It’s quite a sight in person: the siphons boil the water, and what sits in the top chamber isn’t coffee grounds but katsuobushi and other seafood.

Once it’s boiling, the broth rises into the top and mixes in.

I’m not sure whether it actually makes the soup taste better, but as a performance it’s a lot of fun.

Toppings

There were all sorts of toppings.

The ramen

It was on par with the famous shops. There really are a lot of great places these days.

The noodles

The noodles have katsuobushi kneaded into them too. It’s one of the better seafood-broth shops around, and with the fun performance on top, I had a great time.
