Over by Apgujeong Rodeo there’s a modern Korean restaurant called Kwonsooksoo. With the new year rolling around and everyone raving about how good it is, I went to check it out.
Starters
It’s built around the idea of a juansang, a Korean drinking table: the drink was delicious and the nibbles had character. The concept seemed to be enjoying a range of seasonal flavours rather than one unified theme. The liquor served with it was really good; Korean traditional spirits are coming along nicely.
Sashimi
Oyster
Abalone
It was a while ago so I don’t remember the flavours all that well, but you could tell a lot of care went into it.
A sorbet, I think…
Side dishes
Koreans just have to have rice with side dishes and soup. Here’s the setup for that.
Oyster pot rice
Tteokgalbi
The tteokgalbi was a bit ordinary. I couldn’t help thinking a plain steak might have worked better. Everything else was good, so this one was a little disappointing…
Dessert
Kwonsooksoo is really quite good at dessert.
Dessert
Tea
Petits fours
For dessert satisfaction, I’d say it’s easily the leader among Korean restaurants in this price range.
It was just a simple lunch course, but it gave me a clear sense of where the food is headed. I hope they keep cooking this beautifully.
