There had been talk since the start of the year that Lady M, the famous New York cake shop, was coming to Korea, and the boutique ended up opening before the Shinsegae department store counter did. It’s close to home, so I’ve been a few times already.
Front entrance
It’s near Hakdong Station and very easy to find. I’ve visited several times and there were always quite a few customers.
Inside
A simple, clean layout.
Whole cakes
They’re on the large side compared to ordinary cakes.
Cake box
A delicate design. In the early days after opening there were problems with various parts of the service, probably because they weren’t fully prepared yet, but it gradually improved as I kept going back. Now it’s a place with nothing to fault.
Mille Crêpes
Lady M’s signature: a cake made from 20 crêpes layered with fresh cream. Just looking at it you can tell how much work goes in. The cream was as soft as a Dojima Roll. It’s a little pricey, but considering the effort involved, it makes sense.
Cheesecake
The cheesecake was seriously rich. Far better than most dedicated cheesecake shops.
Strawberry shortcake
It tastes just like the ones I used to eat in Japan. Having a cake shop of this calibre near home makes me very happy.
Chocolate Mille Crêpes
If the Mille Crêpes is light and fresh, the chocolate version is deep and intense. It tasted like a proper classic chocolate cake. Personally the plain Mille Crêpes was my favourite, but this one has plenty of charm of its own.
I never expected to see a cake shop of this level in Korea. Pierre Hermé is supposedly coming soon too, so the range of cakes to choose from is only going to get wider.
