Unazen, Asakusa

There is one highly rated unagi specialist in Asakusa. Unagi prices have gone up lately, so I had been hesitating, but I went with the feeling that if not now, when would I ever get to try it.

The front entrance

unagen

It is a small place, but it runs fairly deep inside, so it looked like it could seat a dozen or so people.

Tea

unagen

Cleansing my palate with a reverent heart..

Shinko (pickles)

unagen

Nice.

Tokujo unaju (premium grilled eel over rice)

unagen

The unagi was so good it melted in my mouth, but they use a sauce that is not sweet. That was a first for me, and it threw me a little. To sum up, if this unaju were under 2,000 yen I would want to come and eat it often, but at 3,500 yen, it will probably be my last visit, filed under experience gained.

Clear soup

unagen

An elegant flavour. I do love these places that stick to the Japanese Edomae style.. but the problem is that unagi, unlike soba, is just too expensive. It seems even more so now that wild unagi are not being caught. It would be nice if it were reasonably priced, but since it is not, I will have to be content with enjoying it once or twice in a lifetime..
