The Sendai area is famous for gyutan (beef tongue), and Rikyu, a gyutan specialist that is well known even in Sendai, has opened a branch at Tokyo Skytree. Naturally the line is always long, so I never managed to go, but one evening I finally dropped by.
Tororo, which comes with the Kenko teishoku (healthy set meal)
Grated yam is called tororo, and eating it somehow makes you feel healthier…
Salad
The rice is barley rice
Tail soup
The Korean equivalent would be kkori-gomtang (oxtail soup), and this broth tastes a lot like Korean galbitang. The quality is high too, so it makes a great substitute when you are craving galbitang.
Gyutan
The springy bite of the thick-cut beef tongue is no joke. Lives up to its reputation. At around 1,500 yen the price is reasonable as well, so it is a good place to eat when you are out at Skytree. That is probably why the line is always so long.
Stew
I ordered the Manpuku set, which came with gyutan stew. It does not match a stew specialist, but it is decent enough. Still, if I were doing it again I would just order the gyutan set..
The kitchen was always busy.
Gyutan-don (beef tongue rice bowl)
On my next visit I also ordered the rice bowl. It was tasty, but the tongue was sliced too thin, which was a bit of a letdown. Sendai-style gyutan really has to be thick-cut.
