I heard a churros specialty shop had opened in Hongdae, so I went to take a look. I’m not really the type who loves the overpriced churros you get at amusement parks or movie theaters, but when I heard the rumor that the chef had learned the craft in Spain himself, I got curious about what sort of churros would come out.
The entrance
It’s not far from the alley where all of Hongdae’s dessert shops are clustered. It’s on the second floor and set back a little, so it’s easy to walk right past.
Churros sampler
There was a menu called something like “Did You Two Come Together?” that lets you try a whole range of churros at once. I cut them up with a knife as I ate, and they’re nice and sweet. The ones that weren’t filled with chocolate or milk custard were especially good dipped in the chocolate. The flavor of churros is basically an upgraded version of the kkwabaegi twisted doughnuts we used to eat at the old markets, so there’s nothing all that new about it, but dipping them in chocolate feels like it takes the taste up a notch. Very much the Spanish style, I suppose..
Hot chocolate
It’s good chocolate even on its own. There was so much of it that some was left over after I’d dipped every last churro.
Blueberry yogurt
Being a proper cafe, it has a good variety of other things on the menu too. Churros are high in calories so that part nags at me a bit, but as an occasional treat they’re tasty. And since the hot chocolate is so good, I wonder if it might even work as a hangover cure.
