For timing reasons I had to have lunch somewhere around Jungmun, and the most famous place nearby turned out to be the Jungmun Haenyeo’s House. Gyeongmi Hyugeso is actually a similar concept to a haenyeo’s house, so there was some overlap, but I stopped in to have a bowl of abalone porridge.
The entrance
Maybe because it sits so close to the Jungmun Tourist Complex, it was busy even though peak lunch hour had passed. Grandmothers do the serving, the inside is grubby and the service is slapdash. A textbook tourist-spot eatery atmosphere.
Side dishes
Pretty ordinary.
Assorted sashimi platter
There was raw conch, sea cucumber, sea squirt, octopus.. but I shouldn’t have ordered it. The taste and the freshness were barely any different from what you get delivered in Seoul.
Abalone porridge
The porridge was cooked well. Abalone porridge itself isn’t a bold, punchy dish so it’s hard to call it outstanding, but maybe because of all the innards in it, it had a real depth of flavour. One more dish you have to eat on Jeju Island, cleared.
