There are countless places in Seoul selling cake by the slice, but places where you can buy a whole cake without ordering ahead turn out to be fewer than you’d think. I put together a short list of options: the Shilla Hotel bakery, Lee Seung-nam’s Flowers and Bread, Peony and a few others. (Publique is tarts, so it’s out…) Of those I went to Peony, the closest one and the one selling standard cakes.

Strawberry shortcake is simple and delicious at the same time, which is why it’s so widely loved in Japan. Maybe it’s the good ingredients, but every cake here looked delicious.

Maybe because it’s a popular shop, the place was packed. If I’d had the time I would have sat down and had a slice myself, which was a shame.

There were far too many cakes that looked good. I bought a small one and ate it at home, and it was so soft and delicious. It was worth coming all the way to Hongdae instead of buying one at the Paris Baguette in front of my place. You have to move when everybody else says it’s too much trouble – that’s how you get to eat the good stuff.
