A Walk Around Mihonoseki

Since I was out for once in a long while, I decided to wander around the area. Mihonoseki sits at the very tip of the Shimane Peninsula. It’s mostly known for fishing, but a fair bit of traditional culture survives there too. That day I even happened to run into a wedding procession. It struck me as a rather curious little town.

Mihonoseki harbour

mihonoseki

A really small harbour. Most of the boats are for recreational fishing rather than commercial fishing.

Ivy

mihonoseki

It’s autumn.

The shrine in Mihonoseki

There were lots of people around, so I wondered what was going on. Turns out there was a traditional wedding.

A photo of the bride

Beautiful. The outfit practically glows. A traditional Japanese wedding has a dignity all its own. Just wonderful.

Squeezing into the group photo

mihonoseki

Not exactly the time to be taking pictures of a stranger’s wedding.. hmm..

The other side of the harbour

mihonoseki

The wedding moved from the shrine to a ryokan, and I carried on walking toward the lighthouse.

A man fishing

mihonoseki

Watching how serious he was made me want to try it too, but I hadn’t prepared anything at all. And since I have no idea how to clean and prep a fish, fishing is out of the question. I should learn when I get the chance.

A roadside shrine

mihonoseki

Who knew one town would have two shrines.. It’s not even a big place, but it has plenty to see.

The lighthouse

mihonoseki

Maybe because it’s fairly well known, there were a lot of people. Probably the local date spot.

Autumn leaves along the trail

mihonoseki

Those are proper Pentax colours. This is only my second photo outing with it, but I think I’m slowly getting the hang of it.

Trees along the trail

mihonoseki

I decided to take the walking trail that starts right at the lighthouse. I had a good lunch, so a bit of exercise was in order.

The trail

mihonoseki

It was nice, but it’s a mountain path of sorts, and I hit the limit of my pathetic stamina. Lately I have neither the time nor the place to exercise, and my fitness has gotten really weak. Time for some self-reflection.

A rest stop on the trail

mihonoseki

Even though hardly anyone comes here, it’s kept pretty tidy. For the tourists, I suppose.

From the foot of the hill

mihonoseki

I actually made it over a hill like that. Phew..

A temple

mihonoseki

It’s a small town, but it has so many cultural treasures. The whole place has an old-world feel, and it made me want to come back. I think I walked for about two hours, and when I got back to Mihonoseki the wedding was still going on. Kind of envious, honestly.
