Whenever I come back to Korea, I’m always busy seeing people. Since I usually eat a lot of Korean food while I’m in Korea, when someone asks where to go I tend to say a Korean place would be nice. I heard this one was good for a simple Korean meal around Gangnam, so I gave it a try. I’m not really sure, but the name sounds very familiar, so it might be a chain. It was fine for an easygoing meal.
Starter
Somehow this starter feels like it was benchmarked on Gaehwaok, but it didn’t taste like much.
Japchae
Chuseok is just around the corner and it’s something I’ll be eating plenty of at home anyway, so I wasn’t really craving it..
No idea what fish this is..
but the seasoning was nicely done. This is basically a place that serves lots of clean-tasting side dishes, so none of them individually is anything special, but considering the price you’d have to say you get a lot. (Although for lunch the amount was a bit much to finish.)
Ssam (leafy wraps)
Nothing much..
Side dishes
So much food..
Kongbiji (soybean pulp)
However much I love Korean food.. there’s no helping leaving a lot behind. Still, eating a bit of everything is good for your health.
Grilled fish comes out too.
It feels like there are a lot more of these hanjeongsik (Korean set-course) restaurants these days. I also went to one called Siwol-ui Boribat (October Barley Field) or something like that, and it was packed.
Chadolbagi (thin-sliced beef brisket)
It came blanched rather than grilled, but wrapped in ssam it was okay. I’m not really a meat lover to begin with, so I can’t say it was delicious. Honestly, this place is great value for money, but I can’t strongly recommend it as a great place to eat. Personally, among Korean restaurants like this, Gaehwaok suits me really well, even if it’s a bit pricey and the location is awkward (that and Hanilkwan..). But even a place that suits you gets old if you go too often, so next time a Japanese friend comes to visit Korea, I’ll take them there.
