Izakaya Uoichi

I love exploring new menus, so I don’t keep many regular haunts, but Uoichi is a bit special in that sense. At a Japanese izakaya you can enjoy something new every time you go, so there’s no worry about getting bored.

Draft beer first

izakaya uoichi

I’d like to dedicate this to everyone back in Korea.

Nabe again today

izakaya uoichi

The very same nabe I had before.

Otoshi

izakaya uoichi

Suzuki – sea bass roe. I don’t know how they cooked it, but it’s not salty at all and strangely delicious. Good with beer.

Nabe ingredients

izakaya uoichi

This is for two. Not as good as the one they plated for the photo last time.. It’s a bit overexposed, but I had no time to reshoot..

So the nabe ended up looking like this..

izakaya uoichi

That day the nabe wasn’t the main event; the goal was to eat a variety of dishes, so this was plenty.

Amaebi and yacon salad

izakaya uoichi

It was my first time eating yacon, a kind of root like a radish, yet it tastes like apple. Fascinating..

Tamago

izakaya uoichi

A standard item. I should have ordered some nihonshu with it.

Mosa ebi shrimp tossed with vegetables

izakaya uoichi

This was another first that day, and the salty seasoning had soaked through evenly, delicious. I thought I’d been here plenty of times, but I don’t think I’ve ordered even half the menu yet. On top of that there are lots of seasonal dishes. Heh.. when will I ever get through them all..

Unagi skewer

izakaya uoichi

Eel on a skewer! Though honestly it was too greasy ^_^ and didn’t feel that special.

White wine BRUMONT

izakaya uoichi

A well-rated budget wine from the winery that advertises Tom Cruise flying in on his private jet to buy wine. The owner recommended it as tasty, and its chic, clean taste makes it hard to believe it’s a wine around 1,000 yen. Many people think the higher the grade and the pricier the wine, the better it tastes, but for pairing with everyday food this level is actually just right. Any pricier and you have to pick food to match the wine, which is no easy thing. You’d have to think about the pairing from the moment you start cooking.. By the way, we also drank the red, which wasn’t terrible, but it had far too little body.

Glass

izakaya uoichi

Whether it was the tasty wine or the good atmosphere, I drank a bit too much that day.

Shijimi

izakaya uoichi

Freshwater clams. I ordered them thinking of dishes that would go with white wine. They’re so big they look like regular clams ^_^ Tasty, but whether they went with the white wine..

Braised beef tongue

izakaya uoichi

Beef tongue is a premium ingredient. It was cooked so tender it was hard to pick up with chopsticks. The only problem was that the red wine wasn’t great, but there’s nothing to be done about that.

Anyway, I ate well and had a great time. Working life needs days like this to be any fun. Work too much and life gets stifling..
