Every so often, work takes you to some high-end restaurant you never once thought of going to yourself. Horaiso is said to be a place used mostly by political and business bigwigs, but it doesn’t even appear in the usual restaurant guides, so I’d only ever heard about it through rumors.
Starter
Dishes made with autumn ingredients. Clean, neat flavors, but nothing that really stood out. I guess when a big group comes in to eat, they can’t pay attention to those finer details.
A small stone grill
Well.. when something like this shows up, you can pretty much guess what dish is coming..
Salad
It was just so-so..
Sashimi platter
Not as carefully prepared as the sashimi I’d have at Minami the next day.. but what can you do..
Sea bream soup
Light and nice.
Local wine
A perfectly drinkable wine, nothing more.
And finally, the Shimane wagyu
Slurp..
You put it on like this and grill it yourself.
The taste is just what you see. With meat this fatty, I think medium-rare suits it better than rare. The fat really needs to render properly, after all.
Tempura
Just so-so.. though it was certainly above the basic standard.
Steamed dish
Steamed shrimp and shellfish
Sea bream ochazuke
The point is enjoying the firm, bouncy sea bream. Not a bad dish to close out the meal.
Peach for dessert
This one felt a bit half-hearted to me. Anyway, the overall level of the food was high. If you asked whether I’d go again.. if the company pays, I’ll go. Isn’t that just the law of the world..
