Something suddenly came up that took me to Ginza, so I used the chance to visit an Indian curry specialist I’d been meaning to try for a while. It’s been so hot lately that I was desperate for something spicy.
The front
The restaurant is called Khyber, and it’s been getting a lot of buzz lately. The concept here is Indian food enjoyed with wine, which is why their tandoori chicken is famous. The write-up I read said it’s on the ground floor, but really you’d have to call it floor 1.5. I liked that you don’t end up making eye contact with people walking by. The atmosphere is calm and the staff are friendly, so it left me with the impression of a good restaurant.
The Khyber Special lunch set, 1,500 yen
Just looking at the naan puts a smile on my face. It’s not only nicely baked, it’s big and delicious too. If this place were near my home, I’d have become a regular right away.
The three-curry set
From the left: a hot chicken curry, a medium-hot bean and eggplant curry, and a mild, creamy shrimp curry. Maybe because the hot one wasn’t all that hot, the shrimp curry was the best to my taste. If you look closely, you can see a shrimp that’s fallen in with a plop and is flailing around.
Tandoori chicken, shrimp and kebab
As you’d expect from a special set, it comes out generous and varied. The spices are well balanced and make up for what the curries lacked. I think it would go well with a Rhône wine. The sauce is slightly sweet, unlike how it looks, so it tastes much better when you eat it together with the meat.
Finishing the whole special set leaves you pretty full. There are cheaper options too, so normally it’s probably better not to overdo it and just order a cheaper one. I hope I get the chance to drop by again. ^_^ But whether I’ll ever come back isn’t really up to me… ahem…
