What I Ate in Okinawa – Everything Else

This post was written in 2008. Some information may be out of date.

So this is my last post about Okinawa. This is the goya champuru set meal from a 24-hour diner in town. It’s on a big main road, kind of like the drivers’ diners you find in Korea, and it’s really good. Everywhere in Okinawa opens after 10 a.m., so it’s hard to find somewhere for breakfast, which made this place a real lifesaver. It’s cheap and the portions are pretty generous.

It’s pricey, but the atmosphere was pretty nice.
This is sugarcane.

This is sugarcane.

It’s an Okinawan specialty, grown over quite a large area. It’s what sugar is made from. I bought some without realizing you can’t actually eat it, got fed up halfway through and threw it away. It tastes good, but you’re supposed to chew it for a while and then spit it out.
