Weekend Trip – Kanazawa

This post was written in 2006. Some information may be out of date.

I got into Kanazawa late the night before, found a place to stay, and was out walking around from the morning.
Kanazawa has a simple layout, with the main sights lined up more or less in a straight line. You just keep walking.
It rained all day from the morning, so a lot of my shots were failures. It had been ages since I last shot in the rain…
The first place I went was the Higashi Chaya district. The name means “eastern teahouses”, and it’s a street lined with old-style buildings.
Inside it’s neat and tidy. They’ve done a really nice job with it… worth the trip even from far away.

Kanazawa Castle, shot from Kanazawa Castle Park. The white roof tiles are unusual.

This is Kenroku-en, counted among Japan’s three great gardens. It’s a Japanese garden, and very well kept. It doesn’t have much small-scale charm,
but it overwhelms you with sheer size. The shame was that a place like this really should be seen in autumn or spring rather than summer.
Summer makes the colours rather flat, and with the rain on top of that, it even had a bit of a noir mood.

I’ll skip the details. Just enjoy the photos…

Not Kenroku-en, just a park I passed along the way.

Kanazawa at night. The focus is off. I couldn’t tell on the LCD whether it was in focus or not, which is probably how this happened.

A shot from a seaside park in Kanazawa. Maybe because of the breakwater, the sea was very calm.

And that wraps up my Kanazawa trip.
