A Street Stall in Shenzhen: Banfangjie

I came across this stall while walking down the street, and it looked so good that I just couldn’t walk past it.

This is the place

A young guy runs the stall all by himself. The sign says “港式牛雜” (gangshi niuza): gangshi means Hong Kong style, and niuza means beef offal. So it’s the beef offal dish that Hong Kong is famous for. I guess a place like this exists because Hong Kong and Shenzhen are so close to each other.

Roughly these ingredients..

Everything looked really fresh, and one glance told me this was basically oden. Japanese oden does use beef offal too (gyusuji, for example..), but I had no idea there was a place in China doing it this seriously.

He cooks everything up single-handedly, quick and efficient.

The menu

You can have just the oden, or add noodles too. Even ordering a bit of this and that in a small bowl only comes to about 3,000 to 5,000 won. The prices are really good.

Prepping the ingredients

I always thought using scissors in cooking was a Korean thing, but he handled them like a pro. Seems there’s nothing China doesn’t have..

The sauce

No idea what’s in it, though.. You just pay with Alipay.

That one bowl is the small size, but it’s a pretty generous portion.

As a snack, one bowl is enough for two people to share. Such great value for money..

Back at the hotel..

There’s a good variety of ingredients and everything is delicious. The only slight letdown was that the offal could have used a bit more cooking time, but for this price, this portion and this taste, I couldn’t ask for more. Add a glass of baijiu to this and life would be pretty good..
