Tairan Street in Shenzhen 202508

The Tairan area sits near Zhuzilin, and it is packed with restaurants. There are lots of offices around there, plus housing, and the whole thing felt like some kind of huge downtown, a food alley of sorts… It is fun to wander around once. I would guess China has hundreds more places like this.

The lighting is flashy.

The street

There is a really wide road running through the middle. Seeing things like this, it looks like the city was planned well from the very start.

A street scene like this

Tairan street 202508.

On one side there are really tall buildings, and on the other side it is a full-on food alley. If you wipe out a traditional food alley to put up tall new buildings, then even after the buildings go up, the places people would want to go are gone, so I am not sure that kind of development means much. Seen that way, this kind of development seems very sensible.

A restaurant

Tairan street 202508.

You see quite a few Hong Kong-style restaurants.

Jiangxi Jingde Dapaidang

Tairan street 202508.

The name means a big open-air eatery from Jingde in Jiangxi province, and it was absolutely swarming with people. I was curious what Jiangxi food actually tastes like, but with a line this long there was no way to get in.. You would probably have to come early, around 5, to even have a chance.

Guizhou cuisine

Tairan street 202508.

It feels like food from the whole country is gathered here..

Haengbok Yuja (Happy Yuzu)

Tairan street 202508.

This was the first time I saw Hangul since coming to China. So there are places like this too..

Guizhou hot pot

Tairan street 202508.

For some reason I never once ate hot pot..

I never expected them to have expanded even to a place like this.

The modern scenery and the traditional flavors seem to go together nicely. It is not some big-deal tourist destination, but maybe that is exactly why I learned and felt so much more.
