I visited a Chinese restaurant called Yihao Gongguan.
Outside the restaurant
Even the ingredients look impressive.
The table
Very luxurious.
The liquor too…
Getting a decanter per person is the Chinese way. It was my first time seeing gold flakes in the decanter, and it was luxurious. Chinese people are really something.
Yihao Gongguan
There must be a proper Chinese reading and meaning for this, but my kanji skills don’t go that far. Anyway, I guess it means something like “this is an expensive place.”
Pre-meal appetizer
Nice and light to snack on.
Water and drinks
I was a bit puzzled when these random-looking drinks showed up at a fancy restaurant, and at first I wondered what on earth they were for, but it turned out the whole setup had a reason. The idea is to coat your stomach with something like yogurt or coconut juice before drinking hard liquor, and the water and soft drinks are chasers. In other words… it’s the gear you need before the running starts… In a way, I thought the Chinese approach of preparing this well before drinking is more sensible than the Korean way of just diving in…
Peanuts and nibbles
Since you only start eating once the dishes have been set out to some extent, it’s nice to have something to nibble on.
Peking duck
Sashimi
The apple stuffed with foie gras was delicious, and so was what looked like herring roe. Getting fresh fish in Phnom Penh can’t be easy, though…
Soup
They said it was shark fin or something. It had that rich egg flavor, but it was tasty.
Sausage
Chinese-style sausage is rich in fat, which makes it a great match for baijiu.
Can’t quite remember…
I think it was spicy…
I believe this was stir-fried scallops…
Delicious.
Stir-fried garlic scapes
There was no menu, so I don’t know the exact names.
Soft-shell turtle
This was supposedly a rather expensive dish. It tasted like chicken with pork skin attached. Not something you absolutely need to try.
Stir-fried chili peppers
A drinking snack… I think it’s a Hunan dish.
Radish
It was pickled.
Lotus root and bamboo shoots
Nice and light.
Stir-fried cabbage
Looks like they poured oil over it.
Stir-fried water spinach
It might have been better if the vegetables had come out a bit earlier.
Fried noodles
Time for the carbs, too.
Rice
I’m not sure what this was, but anyway, I ate very well at a high-end restaurant. Eating too well on every business trip is a problem that isn’t really a problem.
Butterfly
I think what sets this place apart is how much gold they use, all very luxurious. For entertaining guests, a place this well put together is a good choice.
