There’s a place called Gotgan in Yeonhui-dong.. turns out it’s a bakery that got famous on Saenghwal-ui Dalin (a Korean TV show about masters of their craft).

The shop

The thing about this place is that it’s unstaffed.. when the owner is actually in the shop it means the bread has sold out, and when there is bread, nobody’s there..

The loaves are pretty big, brioche-style, and they pull apart in nice strands. They taste good.

The space

The equipment is seriously well set up.

Anyway, I made several trips trying to get here, but I usually stop by on a weekend afternoon, and by then there isn’t much bread left. You do need to time it right and go a bit earlier. Brioche-style bread may not be for everyone, but for the price it’s pretty good bread. If you get the chance, it’s a good place to drop into.

They seem to have built the whole place around European pears. Not many places in Korea use them, so it caught my eye.

These days, even when I spot a bakery that looks decent, I’m often already on my way home with bread and can’t buy any more.. that’s what comes of going out for bread every week.. I’ll make a note of this one too and drop by whenever it comes to mind. Though if it goes under before then, there’s nothing I can do..
