Yokohama Chinatown has a huge number of Chinese restaurants, but apparently the closer to the centre a place is, the less its food can be counted on. A friend who lives in the area recommended Ippinkaku and the restaurants around it, so I went to try it.
A place like this..
I’d had the small ramen at Sato, so I still had plenty of room left.
Knife-shaved noodles
The soup tastes like a clean shoyu ramen, and the noodles are thick and yet nicely chewy. The chashu is good too.
Fried rice
They do a good fried rice.
Subuta (sweet and sour pork)
Their deep-frying skills are good as well. It would have been nice to eat at a leisurely pace over a drink, but my schedule was packed that day so that wasn’t an option.
Dumplings
The wrappers are nice and thick, and the kitchen here really knows what it is doing. Honestly it is not at the level of being unbelievably delicious, but I like that the quality is high across such a range of dishes.
Annin tofu (almond jelly)
I rounded the meal off with dessert. So there are places worth eating at even in touristy Chinatown.
