Yasohachi, a yakitori izakaya in Kyoto’s Pontocho part.2

Kumiage yuba sashimi

Yasohachi

Now that I’m in Kyoto, I have to have a slice of yuba too.. Being able to knock out all of Kyoto’s specialties in one sitting is a real treat for a traveller. Whether it actually tastes good is another matter, and that comes down to personal preference..

Reba (chicken liver)

Yasohachi

Liver is the truth..

Grilled Manganji peppers

Yasohachi

Grilled peppers, the mild kind. The taste was just so-so, I’d say..

Torikawa (chicken skin)

Yasohachi

I ordered both shio and tare, and each has its own charm.

Tanba grape chuhai

Yasohachi

Grapes apparently grow in Kyoto, and this is a chuhai made from them. Surprisingly good. Another one that makes clever use of local ingredients.

Kyoto-style suji nikomi

Yasohachi

Of course stewed beef tendon is going to be good.. but the meat was genuinely top quality and it had been simmered in a light, clean broth. It would have been a disaster if we hadn’t ordered it..

Whole-roasted Awaji onion

Yasohachi

This one is worth eating too. Not that it’s outstanding or anything.

We ate ourselves completely stuffed like this and came away totally satisfied.

A view of Pontocho

Yasohachi

The tourists haven’t all come back yet, but there are quite a lot of people about. It might just be because it’s a Friday night.

A street like this

Yasohachi

Gion

Yasohachi

I’ve been to Kyoto so many times, but I think this is my first time deep inside Gion.

The streets of Gion

Yasohachi

Famous restaurants line the street, but there are honestly far too many places to try and the queues are long.. I think I need to do more research before I’ll know where to go.
